NRHA aims to create and apply meaningful housing and neighborhood development programs to serve all residents of Norfolk, Virginia.NRHA looks for people who want to work in a challenging and progressive environment and make a positive difference in the community.About the PositionThe Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority (NRHA) seeks qualified candidates for the positionof Automotive Mechanic. The jobholder inspects motor vehicles, performs the full array of mechanical maintenance, repair, and replacement and motor vehicles, including automobiles, trucks, farm tractors, and aerial lift trucks.Maintains, repairs, and replaces support equipment such as pumps, compressors, and grounds keeping equipment.Responds to emergency road calls.Coordinates work schedule with other departments to assure effective and efficient maintenance of organization motor vehicle fleet.Trains other NRHA staff on the use of heavy equipment as directed.Processes and maintains fleet documentation as directed. Key ResponsibilitiesThe primary duties of this position include:Inspects a variety of motor vehicles, including automobiles, hybrid automobiles, trucks, farm tractors, and aerial lift trucks: receives notification to inspect vehicle; conducts inspection according to standard procedures and using standard testing equipment; performs auto computer diagnostic as indicated; documents findings of inspections; informs supervisor of results of inspection; completes procedures for state safety inspections as directed; and recommends corrective action as needed.Performs the full array of mechanical maintenance, repair, and replacement and motor vehicles, including automobiles, trucks, farm tractors, and specialized equipment such as aerial lift trucks: work includes but is not limited to maintaining and repairing engines; maintaining and repairing transmission systems; maintaining and repairing exhaust systems; maintaining and repairing electrical systems; maintaining and repairing vehicle bodies; and repair and replacement of tires.Maintains, repairs, and replaces support equipment such as pumps, compressors, and grounds keeping equipment:receives work order documentation to perform work on equipment; inspects and tests equipment as needed; identifies problems with equipment; identifies course of action for resolving problems; procures parts, materials, and supplies; performs maintenance and/or repair; completes work order documentation; and arranges for disposition of equipment following maintenance.Maintains fuel and compressed natural gas (CNG) dispensing systems.Responds to emergency road calls: receives notice of emergency; operates truck to travel to emergency location; assesses emergency; makes repairs if practical; arranges for towing if problem cannot be resolved at site; notifies management; and processes documentation.Processes and maintains fleet documentation as directed.Performs other related work as required. About the IdealCandidate Theideal candidate will have:High School diploma or Graduate Equivalency Diploma (GED).Technical training work in General Motors (GM), Ford, and Chrysler vehicle diagnostics is preferred.Two to three years of automotive, truck, and tractor maintenance and repair experience.Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience necessary to obtain the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.Current and valid drivers license and a satisfactory driving record.Mobile Air Conditioning Society (MACS), forklift, brake, and air conditioning certifications required.On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) 1 and OBD2 certifications required.Virginia motor vehicle inspection license required.Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications are preferred for this job.Physical Demands/Work EnvironmentWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, smell, taste, see, or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing more than 60 pounds.Job requires depth, color, and texture perception. NRHA will consider equivalent substitutes for education and/or experience, provided that the candidate can demonstrate that he/she has obtained the knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the job.NRHA offers a competitive compensation and benefitspackage. Thepay range for this position is $37,440.00 - $59,550.40 per year. The pay offer will be determined by the candidate's work history and skill mix.
